Somalia has experienced complex protracted humanitarian crisis for more than two decades due to the prolonged civil war, political instability and terrorist insurgents compounded with the climate change impacts (recurrent droughts and seasonal floods).

Acute malnutrition has worsened and remains high in many parts of Somalia. Results from 28 separate nutrition surveys conducted between June and July 2016 by FSNAU and partners among rural and internally displaced populations across Somalia indicate that an estimated 193,200 children under the age of five are acutely malnourished, including 36,900.

According to the United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA), Somalia is amongst the 13 African countries that will face water scarcity by 2025. Somalia has less than 500 m3/cap/year and this could be attributed to erratic spatial and temporal distribution of rainfall with average annual amounts falling below 600mm; high evaporation, and negative human activities such excessive and uncontrolled charcoal production.

Natural resources form the basis of people’s livelihoods in Somalia, with over 65 percent of the population accounts pastoralism for their livelihood, livestock and livestock products contribute to over 40 percent of GDP and more than 50 percent of export earnings (African Development Bank, 2013). Therefore this sector is the mainstay of the economy and is reliant on the goods and services provided by rangeland eco-systems. In addition to livestock, the country exports Frankincense and Myrrh (FAO, 1995), also dependent on the health of terrestrial ecosystems. The country is thus heavily dependent on natural resources for livelihoods and economic growth that underscoring the importance of the sustainable environment and natural resource management in Somalia.

Impunity is the underlying cause for all types of the human rights violations in Somalia and the major human rights violations and abuses widely persist in Somalia include; gender and domestic violence, rape, restrictions on freedom of assembly, restrictions on right of citizens to peacefully change their government, restrictions on civil liberties, child abuse mainly recruitment of child soldiers, extrajudicial killings, disappearances, cruel and unusual punishment, harsh and life-threatening prison conditions, arbitrary arrest and detention, denial of fair trial, trafficking in persons, abuse of and discrimination against minorities, restrictions on workers’ rights and child labor.
